The Book and Periodical Council (BPC) invites expressions of interest from individuals across Canada’s written-word sector who want to help shape the future of our national association representing publishing, writing, and reading in this country.
Serving on the BPC Board is an opportunity to contribute at a high level to sector leadership alongside decision-makers from across Canada’s book, magazine, newspaper, library, and writing communities.
Membership with the BPC is not required. Applications close April 15, 2026.

Board service at BPC offers you the opportunity to:
Influence national dialogue affecting Canada’s written-word industries
Collaborate with senior leaders across publishing, lending, writing, editing, translation, and distribution
Expand your professional network across associations and regions

The BPC is the only national forum where the country’s written-word sector convenes across disciplines to identify shared priorities and coordinate collective action.

This is an opportunity to contribute your expertise while growing professionally. BPC Board members serve in a volunteer capacity and provide strategic oversight, guidance, and support to the organization. You’ll collaborate with industry leaders, participate in meaningful decision-making, and play a key role in advancing the organization’s mission and vision alongside the Managing Director.
As a Board Director, you will:
Help shape the strategic direction of the organization
Provide financial and governance oversight
Contribute expertise and sector insight
Support long-term sustainability and impact
Employ appropriate risk mitigation strategies
Create, interpret and administer policies
Act as an ambassador for the BPC within your networks

We are seeking two new Board Directors who bring fresh perspectives and one or more of the following backgrounds or experiences:
Business or sponsorship development
Membership or association growth and engagement
Representation from outside Ontario
Some professional experience in Canada’s newspaper, magazine, book publishing, book selling, library, or writing sectors
If you are passionate about strengthening Canada’s written-word community and see the value in national collaboration, we encourage you to apply even if your background does not perfectly match every category above.

Monthly virtual Board meetings (1.5 hours) from September to June
Participation on one Board Committee (typically meets monthly in advance of Board meetings)
Attendance at the Annual General Meeting (virtual, June)
Three-year term with the possibility of serving an additional three-year term for those who wish to continue their commitment
Meetings are structured to be focused and respectful of members’ professional responsibilities.

All applications will be reviewed by the Governance and Nominating Committee. Only selected candidates will be invited to a brief Zoom interview between May 1-31, 2026. Successful nominations will be presented at the Annual General Meeting in late June 2026.
