SaskBooks is the creative industry association for book publishers in Saskatchewan. Incorporated in 1989, SaskBooks has been conducting book industry research, advocating for publishing, producing professional development opportunities for publishers, and has been marketing Saskatchewan books for more than 30 years. Working closely with industry stakeholders and partners, SaskBooks enjoys a membership of more than 40 book publishers, all of whom are located in Saskatchewan and who produce the work of over 800 writers, more than 90% of whom are Canadian.
Programs and Services
Professional Development: SaskBooks researches, organises, co-ordinates, and hosts several PD sessions for book publishers each year. We have provided PD sessions on every topic related to book publishing, from manuscript evaluation and development to print and digital production to marketing and distribution strategies to licensing and rights/royalty negotiations.
Book Reviews: SaskBooks produces weekly book reviews to help spread the good word about Saskatchewan’s thriving book industry. Each week, we distribute a free 400-500 word review to every weekly newspaper in Saskatchewan, directly to the inboxes of a growing list of teachers, librarians, and bibliophiles, and is publicised through our social media networks. These reviews, written by emerging and established writers, are also featured at reviews.skbooks.com for easy access to our visitors from around the world.
Display and Sales: SaskBooks attends approximately 20 display venues throughout the year in Saskatchewan and across Western Canada. Many are teacher and library conferences, but we also attend gift and trade shows with a curated selection of Saskatchewan books. SaskBooks attends international book fairs as well.
Catalogues: SaskBooks produces an annual catalogue of new and recently released Saskatchewan books. We distribute the catalogue with the Western Producer and other publications where possible. The catalogues are also available for free distribution at all of our display venues, through an annual mail-out to all of the province’s schools and libraries, and a downloadable digital version is available on the SaskBooks website. SaskBooks also produces an educational resource for teachers, outlining curriculum recommendations and course adoptions for Saskatchewan books.
Book Week: For one week in September, it really is all about Saskatchewan books. With official provincial designation, Saskatchewan Book Week tours authors and publishers to a half dozen venues throughout rural and Northern Saskatchewan, bringing our books to places where bibliophiles have no bookstores. This week-long celebration of Saskatchewan books visits schools, libraries, community centres, museums, and anywhere else we find book lovers.
