The Professional Writers Association of Canada as founded in 1976 by a small group of freelance writers in the periodical industry. While the work our members do has expanded greatly since that time, PWAC remains the professional association for Canada’s freelance writers. We have a membership of over 630 working writers across the country.

Major Programs

Online database of PWAC membership (, listing writers by searchable variables such as location, areas of expertise and types of writing.

PWAC’s general information website (, including a regularly updated blog about the writing business.

PWAC Presents — seminars on writing and communications aimed at Canada’s corporate and not-for-profit sectors.

Local chapter events — PWAC has local and regional chapters across the country, most of which present writing-related professional development and networking opportunities for writers in their area.

MagNet conference — PWAC is a full partner in the largest magazine writing and publishing conference in the country. Each June, PWAC presents writing related professional development to the magazine industry.

Networking and information sharing — PWAC provides its members with e-mail discussion lists, online forums and writing related online materials.
