The Writers’ Trust is a unique institution, providing a level of support unmatched by any other non-governmental organization or foundation. Through our various programs and awards, we celebrate the talents and achievements of our novelists and poets, biographers, and non-fiction writers and aim to find new ways to enrich our common literary heritage and to strengthen Canada’s cultural foundations.
Major Programs
The Woodcock Fund is available to established writers in mid-project who are facing financial crisis.
The Awards & Prizes Program annually recognizes the achievements of Canada’s literary community.
The Writers’ Workshop Program contributes towards the development and maintenance of an active creative writing community in Canada.
The Margaret Laurence Memorial Lecture is given at the Annual General Meeting of the Writers’ Union of Canada. The Writers’ Trust is pleased to provide the $5,000 honorarium to the guest speaker.
The Thomas Head Raddall Atlantic Fiction Prize is awarded to an Atlantic writer for a work of fiction published in the previous year, co-presented with the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia.
The Writers’ Trust/Humber School for Writers Scholarships provides funding toward scholarships each year to students enrolled in the Humber School for Writers Correspondence Program.
Berton House Writers’ Retreat provides writers with the opportunity to leave behind their regular day-to-day lives, travel to the Canadian north, and concentrate on their work.
