Registration open for Editors’ Association of Canada Conference 2012

Registration is now open for the Editors’ Association of Canada’s 2012 conference in Ottawa, Ontario.This year, more than 35 sessions will be presented by a wide array of expert speakers during three days of networking and professional development.

EAC’s 2012 conference takes place June 1–3 at the newly renovated Ottawa Convention Centre in downtown Ottawa.

Writers’ Union of Canada Presents Freedom to Read Award to Lawrence Hill

The Writers’ Union of Canada has announced that the recipient of its 2012 Freedom to Read Award is the Canadian author Lawrence Hill.

“We are delighted that Lawrence Hill will be this year’s recipient,” said Greg Hollingshead, Chair of the Union. “We felt that he deserved this honour on the basis of his reasoned and eloquent response to the threat to burn his novel The Book of Negroes.”

The title The Book of Negroes is drawn from that of a 1783 historical document, which lists the names of Black Loyalists who, having fought for the British during the American Revolutionary War, were to be transported to Nova Scotia. Roy Groenburg of The Netherlands, finding the use of the word “Negro” in the title of Mr. Hill’s novel offensive, burned the cover and publicly threatened to burn the book.

Canadian Bookshelf Rebrands as The 49th Shelf

Canadian Bookshelf re-launched yesterday as The 49th Shelf, offering expanded features and book listings and naming Amazon.ca as its lead sponsor for 2012.

Since its launch in June 2011, the website has steadily gained a following of book readers keen to discuss Canadian fiction and non-fiction, post recommended reading lists and discover new books among the 50,000 titles to be found on this uniquely Canadian book site.

Writers’ Trust of Canada announces Shaughnessy Cohen Prize shortlist

The unfinished border between Maine and New Brunswick, a biography of Sir John A. Macdonald, a pine beetle epidemic, and two biographies on Pierre Trudeau make up The Writers’ Trust of Canada’s Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing shortlist.

The Shaughnessy Cohen prize, established in honour of a Windsor, Ontario, MP who died in December 1998, is now in its twelfth year. The prize is awarded annually to a non-fiction book that captures a political subject of interest to Canadian readers.

Call for Submissions in TWUC’s Writing For Children Competition

The Writers’ Union of Canada has announced that submissions are being accepted until April 24, 2012 for the 16th annual Writing for Children Competition. The winning entry will be the best Canadian work of up to 1,500 words in the English language, fiction or non-fiction, written by an unpublished author.
