CBA National Conference

The Canadian Booksellers Association’s National Conference and Libris Awards will be taking place from June 3-5 at the Toronto Congress Centre, North Building.

In a bold new move, the CBA annual conference will be tied in with Retail Council of Canada (RCC)’s National STORE Conference. This partnership will allow CBA exhibitors and sponsors access to a wider retail audience while providing our members with a wide range of sessions and topics to choose from including CBA specific sessions which will be announced shortly. In addition, the conference will provide attendees with access to a wide range of networking opportunities.

CBA members will get two conferences for the price of one. To quote Nancy Frater, Owner of Booklore in Orangeville, ON, who attended last year’s STORE, “The content was outstanding and the ability to network with peers and colleagues from across the country was invaluable the combination of both conferences will be even more worthwhile. I think it is a good bang for the buck.”

The Libris Awards honour everyone who has a role in seeing great Canadian books connect meaningfully with readers. By paying tribute to authors, editors, sales reps, distributors, publishers-and, of course, booksellers-under one banner, these Awards underscore the extremely collaborative nature of the book industry and demonstrate that our most creatively and commercially successful literary enterprises come from one book community’s combined talents.

CBA will also be presenting the industry’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Ms. Atwood at the industry’s annual gala which this year will take place on Sunday June 3, 2012 at the Toronto Congress Centre.

CBA’s Lifetime Achievement Award is given in recognition of Ms. Atwood’s outstanding and longstanding contribution to the book industry. This award, which is bestowed at the discretion of CBA Board of Directors, allows booksellers and other industry stakeholders to explicitly recognize an author’s cultural impact on Canadian literary culture. Past recipients include Timothy Findley, Carol Shields, Pierre Berton, Charles Burchell and Stephen King.

Start: June 3, 2012 8:00 am
End: June 5, 2012 5:00 pm

Berton House Writers’ Retreat

The thrill of the gold rush is nothing compared to …
THE BERTON HOUSE KLONDIKE BANQUET

Held on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, in Toronto’s Berkeley Church, the festive event brought together friends and admirers of Pierre Berton to raise funds in support of Canadian writers-in-residence at Pierre Berton’s boyhood home in Dawson City, Yukon.

The evening included fabulous entertainment from host Vicki Gabereau, musician David Warrack, and our CanCan girls. Writers-in-residence were also involved: eminent historian Charlotte Gray talked about her Yukon experience and the book she wrote while at Berton House, Gold Diggers: Striking it Rich in the Klondike; and current writer-in-residence Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail was Skyped in to talk about what its like to live in Dawson City as winter approaches.

Silent and live auctions featured the most exciting prizes this side of the treeline, including fine wines and scotches, vacation experiences both northern (a one-week Klondike Adventure Summer Getaway in the Yukon for two) and southern (access to a luxury villa situated between Manual Antonio National Park and the town of Quepos, on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast), and a buckskin coat designed by Canadian fashion icon Linda Lundström.

We offer our gratitude to the numerous sponsors, table and ticket buyers, and auction-item winners and donors who through their generosity have supported this program.

We also thank the Berton House Writers’ Retreat Gala committee for their continued dedication in putting together this fantastic event.

This year’s event will commemorate the War of 1812 and be held at Toronto’s historic Fort York on June 5, 2012. Stay tuned for further details.
